The death toll from the 7.1 magnitude quake included at least 137 in the capital, and was set to rise as rescue workers search the precarious ruins amid the threat of aftershocks, collapsing rubble and gas leaks.

There was growing anger towards the armed forces, who started to raze collapsed buildings less than 72 hours after the earthquake – prompting fears that buildings where survivors remained trapped could be destroyed.
