TRA closes Ekenforde education facilities over tax arrears

Tanga. Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has closed four schools owned by Eckenforde Education Institution for allegedly failing to pay tax between 2012 and 2016.

According to TRA regional manager, Mr Masawa Masatu, the closed institutions include the Ekenforde University.

“The list of closed institutions also includes Ekenforde primary school and teaching college all being situated in Tanga city,” he explained.

Although he couldn’t unveil the figures, Mr Masatu said the institution owes TRA a number of taxes including Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and Value Added Tax (VAT).

“I have no power to reveal the amount that they were supposed to pay, all I can say is that we have taken measures for the failure to comply with their tax responsibilities,” he said.

The TRA official added that the closure follows continued efforts by the taxman to collect government revenue according to the law, urging the business men in the region to ensure they pay taxes on time to avoid unnecessary inconveniences.
